Welcome to China Residencies!  China Residencies is a non-profit platform operating a freely accessible database of artist residencies and work opportunities in mainland China and Hong Kong. Here's a list of deadlines for residencies, call for papers, job opportunities & lots of different things you can apply for that have a connection to China.


RESIDENCIES + FUNDING: 

The Goethe Institute is funding up to 25,000 euros for coproductions by artists in the fields of theatre, dance, music, performance art, and digital media between Germany and non-European countries including China. Apply before 15 April 2019.

Art Book in China is welcoming submissions for the 4th edition of Art Book Fair Beijing, which will take place at the Times Art Museum. Apply before April 18th, 2019.

Bosch-Siftung's Crossing Borders funds up to 15,000 euros in international research trips for authors, filmmakers and photographers from German-speaking countries as well as China (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao), India, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam. Apply before 30 April 2019.

Asia Discovers Asia Meeting for Contemporary Performance is having an open call for the collective residency program Artist Lab, an invitation for artists to meet, exchange ideas and invent new collaborative possibilities. Artists from all kinds of disciplines, with or have had community-based art practice and are interested in collaborative research, are invited to apply. Residency covers round-trip flights to Taipei, living allowance and accommodations  for the entire residency period (arrival on 22 July and departure on 19 August 2019). The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is having an open call for its 2019-2020 Media Fellowship Program. It offers two up-and-coming and established Canadian journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories for Canadian audiences. The Foundation will award two fellowships in 2019-20, each valued at up to C$10,000 for in-country travel and expenses, and coverage of trans-Pacific travel with support in part from Cathay Pacific Airways. yi:project space is hosting its 2019 Open Call for Beijing22 Research Grants. The grants are intended for Beijing-based researchers, covering topics about utopia, urban development and the ongoing transformation of Beijing under the influences of the city planning strategy "Jing-Jin-Ji" and the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2022. The 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art is welcoming applications from Australian citizens or permanent residents to their annual 4A Beijing Studio Program and 4A Emerging Writer's Program. Learn more about them here and apply before May 24th

The CEAC in Xiamen is welcoming proposals from artists in all discipline to their residency period starting in July 1, 2019 until October 9, 2019. Download application information here and apply before May 30th

The Australia Council for the Arts – in partnership with Institute for Provocation (IFP) – is welcoming applications from Australian visual artists for a three-month studio residency at IFP. Learn more about here and apply before June 4th. 

The Beijing International Jewelry Art Exhibition is an international and academic biennale exhibition for art jewelry. that is currently accepting submissions for 2019.  Apply here before June 15th, 2019.

The Fresh Milk Art Platform, China Residencies, The Barbados Museum and Historical SocietyI: project space, and Alice Yard are holding an open call for recent film and video works by contemporary artists practicing in the Caribbean, China and their diasporas to be included in the third edition of Transoceanic Visual Exchange (TVE), a series of programming taking place between Barbados, China, and Trinidad & Tobago. The Sunny Art Prize competition is seeking submissions. It offers a selection of thirty artists the opportunity to take part in international activities, including exhibitions and a residency. Apply before June 30th, 2019

The City of Richmond in Canada is having an open call for an 11-month residency in Richmond, BC, Canada for Chinese Artists. With an estimated population of 218,000, Richmond is the fourth-most populous city in British Columbia. It has an immigrant population of 60%, the highest in Canada, and more than half of its population is of Asian descent, many of whom immigrated in the late 1980s, mostly from Hong Kong, Taiwan and, more recently, Mainland China. Two of the largest Buddhist temples in North America reside in Richmond: the International Buddhist Temple and the Ling Yen Mountain Temple. Deadline to apply is July 3. Chronus Art Center in Shanghai is welcoming applications for their 3-months Research and Creation Fellowship for international artists and researchers. The selected will be offered a total amount of USD$10,000 for a 3 month deep-immersion period starting in late September/early October; the total amount includes artist fees, living expenses and materials. In addition, the fellow will be granted access to lab facilities and tools, including ‘OPTITRACK’ motion capture system, two ‘Oculus Rift’ VR headsets, laser cutter, 3D printer, band saw, sander belt, drill press, manual and prototyping tools, a soldering station along with a variety of electronic components. CAC will provide supporting paperwork to assist in the process of securing visas for international fellows. CAC will also help with travel bookings and finding accommodations in Shanghai. Travel and housing expenses must be covered from the amount provided by the fellowship. Deadline to apply July 15th (Beijing time).

Tai Kwun in Hong Kong is welcoming applications to their Summer Institute, a two-weeks program of seminars exploring he theme of Future Commons. Deadline to apply July 20th.

Three Shadows in Beijing & Xiamen seeking photographers, filmmakers, video artists, and other new media creators. Apply anytime.

The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association's Artist Residency Abroad Funding Scheme provides up to HK$15,000 for Hong Kong artists seeking artist residencies abroad. Applications accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly, and artists should apply to their own residency programs prior to applying.

Artists traveling on a #slowtrain to or in China can apply anytime for a virtual residency to take over our Instagram account.

C-Platform and Mexcia Lab are looking for artists for their Lucitopia Residency Program as part of a cooperation with Green Art Lab Alliance (EU)Apply throughout the year. 

The Prince Claus Mobility Fundin cooperation with Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), accepts applications throughout the year to support travel within Asia and between the Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cambodia, Philippines, Lao DPR, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, India, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Thailand and Europe. It is specifically intended for emerging artists and cultural practitioners living in and travelling from countries listed above.

PAPERS, WORKSHOPS, RESEARCH:

Museum 2050's second annual symposium, "Defining Institutions: Proposals for Museums of the Future," is taking place April 28th-30th at the Zhi Art Museum in Chengdu. 

Asia Art Archive in America is welcoming applications to their 2019 Leadership Camp: “Model Minority and Model Majorities.” The goal is to use participants’ lived experiences as anchor points to collectively and actively workshop formats and frameworks for being Asian, in its multitude forms, in America. Apply before Friday, May 10, 2019

Para Site is inviting proposals for the 5th edition of Workshops for Emerging Curators,  which will take place on 10-12 October, 2019. This 9-day intensive programme is designed to provide learning and thinking opportunities, as well as  opportunities for networking and enhance the development of systems intending to nurture the participants’ careers. Para Site will offer a limited number of scholarships to support the participation of outstanding young professionals.
